IN CONVERSATION —

MARLON WILLIAMS

The velvety but playful voice of New Zealand musician Marlon Williams has become instantly recognisable both locally and internationally, through the release of his most recent albums Make Way for Love and My Boy. A modern interpretation of country/folk music, his songs form a genre of their own — particularly when paired with the strange worlds within his music videos. Acting has also become part of his oeuvre — starring in the film A Star is Born alongside Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, and most recently Bad Behaviour alongside Jennifer Connelly.

"I choose natural because it's grounding."

I CREATE —

Songs and associated media.

I'M CURRENTLY INSPIRED BY —

Everything. Walking around with my tongue out to ensure maximum sensory intake.

I'M READING —

A book my buddy gave me for my last birthday that I’m just getting around to; The Fermata by Nicholson Baker. It’s about a man who discovers he can pause time and instead of becoming a superhero or villain he just takes off womens clothes. It's like if Brett Eastin Ellis wrote a screenplay for a mid-nineties Rob Schneider film.

I TAKE CARE OF MYSELF BY —

I play a lot of basketball for fitness but my one-two wellness punch is a bowl of Vietnamese pho followed by a mall massage.

I CHOOSE NATURAL BECAUSE —

It’s grounding. It helps keep me conscious of the building blocks that make up Te Ao Tūroa.

MY FAVOURITE ABEL SCENT —

Cyan Nori. I grew up by the ocean and because I spend so much time away from home it’s important to have something of it with me.
